Communication and Positive Behavioral Supports for Students with Autism and Other Complex Needs
Develops a context for current and pre-service counselors, teachers, and school leaders to understand disability as a social construct in society and the educational community. Critically examines the historical context for special education and the institutional approach to disability and utilizes that context to discuss current educational, and behavioral practices and adaptive communication skills for students with complex support needs (e.g., intellectual disability, autism). Addresses laws and regulations affecting the education and inclusion of all students, family support, the inclusion debate, assessment and labeling, and other issues facing schools and community organizations.
